Abstract:
Enormous unexplored spectrum in the sub-THz and THz range provides an appealing solution for supporting ultra-high data rates required in 6G emerging applications, such as virtual and augmented reality, metaverse, and 3D gaming. Given the potential of terahertz (THz) communications systems to provide such data rates over short distances, they are widely regarded to be the next frontier for the wireless communications research. Given various challenges for THz communication, including less favorable propagation characteristics, higher propagation losses, losses due to molecular absorption, higher sensitivity to blockages, and a pronounced effect of scattering, it is of crucial importance to accurately model and analyze THz networks. In this tutorial, we aim to provide a unified treatment of THz bands with particular emphasis on their propagation characteristics, channel models, design and implementation considerations, and potential applications to 6G wireless. We will cover mathematical tools to model and analyze THz networks along with their distinguishing features.
